Desh-premik & swadhinatar gaan I

Last updated: 5 October 2017 From the section 1971 Muktijuddho

Songs of revolution that Bengalis had never heard before became part of their existence through Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. The songs would keep the spirit of the nation high and fuel the fire in the Muktijuddha's heart to surge forward and fight the injustice.

Few influential jagoroner gaan (songs of awakening) during 1971 Bangladesh Muktijuddho

  • Mora Ekti Phulke Bachabo Bole Juddho Kori () - written by Gobindo Haldar and composed by Apel Mahmood. Arguably the song most associated with the War of Liberation. The song is about how the freedom fighters fought not only for the love of the nation but for independence of every person and thing in Bangladesh.
  • Teer Hara Ei Dhaoyer Shagor () - written by Gobindo Haldar, composed by Apel Mahmood and sung by Rothin Roy. It's about the struggle for independence, comparing it to the turbulent seas.
  • Joy Bangla Banglar Joy () - written by Gazi Mazharul Anwar, composed by Anwar Parvez and sang by Mohammad Abdul Jabbar. The optimistic song is about how Bangladesh would definitely win the war. It became the signature tune of the station.
  • Shono, Ekti Mujiborer Theke () - written by Gauriproshonno Mojumdar and composed by Angshuman Rai, the song is about the independence speech given by our founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and how he inspired the whole nation.
  • Purbo Digante Shurjo Utheche () - written by Gobindo Haldar and composed by Samar Das. It was one of the most famous songs of the time, even being labelled the "Shongramer Gaan" (The song of Liberation). The song is about the sun, red with the blood of the martyrs, rising on a new day in an independent nation.
  • Karar Oi Louho Kopat () - written and composed by our national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, this song is also known as 'Bhangar Gaan' (Breakup song). It was also incredibly inspirational during the British occupation and the independence movement of India. The Rebel Poet is believed to have written this song while he himself was in prison.
  • Nongor Tolo Tolo () - written by Nayeem Gohor and composed by Samar Das is yet another song about weathering the storm of war to gain independence.
  • Bhebo Nago Ma Tomar Chelera () - written by Mostafizur Rahman and composed by Samar Das. A song about the martyrs, consoling the nation over the countless deaths
  • Rokto Diye Naam Likhechi () - written by Abdul Kashem Shondhip and composed by Sujeya Syam it is about how we fought for our independence with the blood of the martyrs.
  • Salam Salam Hajar Salam () - written by Fazle Huda and composed and sang by Mohammad Abdul Jabbar.
  • Ek Shagor Rokte'er Binimoye Banglar Swadhinata Anlo Jara () - written by Gobindo Haldar and composed by Apel Mahmood.
  • Chol Chol Chol, Urdhogogone Baajey Madol () - written by Kazi Nazrul Islam
  • Banglar Hindu, Banglar Boddho, Banglar Christian, Banglar Musolman () - written by Gauriproshonno Majumdar and composed by Shomor Rai. The song is about a united Bangladesh, despite religious differences and urged every citizen, from all walks of life and religion, to take up arms and fight for independence.

To me, facing the enemy head-on in the battle field with guns seemed more proper way of fighting. So it took me a while to realise the true strength of radio; with time I understood that the station was no less strong in fighting than any guns. The station was able to reach a huge number of people, and take our messages to them, motivate them to face the Pakistanis and keep fighting.
